Please note comment below regarding coyotes.
Recently a
pack of coyotes was spotted at Sunset Bay. Unfortunately they found prey in a
small dog, a beloved pet of one of our full time residents. This is so very,
very sad and our condolences to the family! This is also a reminder that Sunset
Bay is a rural community and as such has had sightings of wild animals
including, boars, a mountain lion, the aforementioned coyotes, a rattlesnake
and of course numerous wild rabbits. As a reminder to everyone, please be aware
of your surroundings and the area. Part of the charm of our community is Mother
Nature’s natural beauty, which at one time was the habitat or open ground for
outdoor wildlife. As development grows, wild life can become bolder in seeking
their sustenance. Over time they will seek more opportune areas. In the interim
please exercise caution and awareness. In the evenings it is a good idea to
carry a bright flashlight, perhaps even one of those very loud personal fog
horns. Be as diligent during the day as you would be at night.
Here are a
few tips that are helpful tidbits. Coyotes and feral pigs can dig, so
deterrents need to be at least 12-18 inches below ground. The feral pig can
jump just over three feet, a coyote can scale over eight feet, as can a
mountain lion. If you have pets, do not leave their food outside, pick up
and properly dispose of dog and cat feces, as both of these can attract
wildlife. If you continue to see predator wildlife, contact the Texas
Parks and Wildlife to discuss potential options at: Rockport – 715 S. Highway 35, Rockport, TX 78382;
361/790-0312.
We want everyone to be safe, secure and enjoy living in our
community, while also being mindful of predators wild… and human!
